Nous continuons avec la seconde partie de l’interview de Dana Churchill. On y parle de Kickstarter, de taureaux zombies et de l’avenir du studio.

- Au niveau de l’apport de contenu pour The Dead Linger, comme les mises à jour, ça se passera comment ?
- Pour le moment, nous pensons faire des mises à jour hebdomadaires à la sortie de la version alpha, afin d’ajouter un maximum de contenu au jeu. Plus tard, nous accepterons le contenu personnalisé venant de la communauté comme des models 3D ou des choses comme cela, à travers le modding notamment.
- Quand pensez-vous que le jeu sortira dans sa version finale ?
- Vous savez, nous pensons passer par un système d’alpha funding, comme Minecraft par exemple. Nous pensons sortir une version alpha d’ici deux mois, pour ensuite arriver petit à petit, en deux ans peut-être, au jeu dans sa version finale.
- Avez-vous quelque chose de prévu après The Dead Linger ?
- Nous avons plusieurs choses en tête, mais pour le moment on ne se concentre que sur The Dead Linger car cela peut prendre des années avant d’arriver à la version finale du jeu. Vous savez, ça peut prendre très longtemps, c’est donc notre principale préoccupation.
- En quoi le financement par Kickstarter a t-il changé quelque chose à votre méthode de développement ? Qu’est-ce qui a changé ?
- Le développeur principal travaille maintenant à plein temps, ce qui accélère considérablement le développement. Avant, il avait beaucoup de choses à gérer en plus du développement. Mais maintenant, tout va deux fois plus vite ! Nous pouvons affirmer de manière très précise la date de sortie de la version alpha désormais. Nous n’étions sûrs de rien auparavant.
- Alors, à quand une version bêta ?
- *rire* Pour le moment, nous ne nous concentrons que sur la version alpha, c’est très important.
- Vous avez tout juste fini votre campagne Kickstarter, mais pourquoi Kickstarter ?
- Nous avions vraiment envie de lancer le jeu de manière officielle, de décoller. Vous savez, le développeur principale travaillait à mi-temps, et nous développons le jeu depuis 6 mois maintenant. Cela a vraiment donné un coup d’accélérateur au développement du jeu. Sans ça, nous n’aurions pas été capables de donner une version alpha aux gens qui l’attendaient. C’était donc vraiment pour décoller du sol, se lancer, et réussir à développer The Dead Linger de la meilleure manière qui soit.
- Ça a dû être un vrai changement après la campagne Kickstarter, non ?
- Je ne vous le fais pas dire. Tout était extraordinaire, toutes ces personnes qui s’inscrivent, donnent des suggestions, posent des questions … C’est génial. On a d’ailleurs eu après cela une énorme vague d’inscriptions sur le forum du jeu. C’est hallucinant de voir tous ces gens qui nous supportent.
- Hmmm … Une suggestion à nous citer, peut-être ?
- Oh mon dieu … *rire* Actuellement, quelques personnes nous ont suggéré d’intégrer des vaches zombies et des taureaux zombies, choses que nous intégrerons sûrement dans le futur.
- Vous inquiétiez-vous de savoir si vous alliez réunir ou non les fonds ?
- Oh … Vous savez, je pense que nous ne nous sommes jamais inquiétés de savoir si nous allions réunir cet argent ou non. Nous avons toujours été assez optimistes à ce sujet.
- SandSwept Studios s’est donc inscrit sur Kickstarter pour réunir ces fonds. Comment cela fonctionne t-il ?
- Normalement, vous devez avoir travaillé sur le projet avant de vous inscrire. Enfin, disons que ça vous aide d’avoir quelque chose à montrer. Vous postez votre projet comme une proposition, et vous donnez quelques informations sur votre jeu, si vous faîtes un jeu. Ensuite, vous attendez de voir si ça plaît au public.
- Comment l’équipe a t-elle réagi à tous ces dons ?
- C’était juste … Je ne sais pas, vous savez, ça vous rend si heureux de voir que des gens vous supportent et sont prêts à donner leur argent pour un jeu dont ils ne connaissent presque rien. C’était génial, et toute l’équipe était encore plus motivée. Chaque jour, nous nous disions : « Oh, nous en sommes déjà à 60% ! ». Et maintenant : « Woooaaw ! Nous en sommes à 258% ! ». Je n’arrive pas à y croire.
- Pensez-vous que Kickstarter soit une bonne solution pour financer les jeux vidéo tout jeunes ?
- Je suis super enthousiaste à ce sujet. Je pense que c’est une très bonne idée. Je supporte et je soutiens vraiment Kickstarter, et chaque studio qui s’y inscrira pour financer leur projet.
- En quoi cela peut-il les aider ?
- C’est vraiment génial, puisque ça peut les aider à décoller, à se lancer ! Tout comme nous, en fait. Beaucoup de studios sont trop petits, et ont besoin de cela pour se faire un nom. Certaines de ces compagnies réussissent, d’autres réussissent encore plus, mais d’autres n’y arrivent pas, ce qui est dommage pour les gens qui les ont soutenu.
- Comment avez-vous décidé du prix des différentes récompenses sur le Kickstarter ?
- Je sais que de nombreuses compagnies auraient directement décidé de vendre leur jeu pour 50$, mais nous, non. Nous savons très bien que le jeu sera plus cher à l’avenir, c’est pourquoi nous avons opté pour un prix de 25$, ce qui permet aux gens de jouer au jeu lorsqu’il n’en est qu’à ses débuts. Pour les gens qui donnent plus, nous avons réfléchi à quelques récompenses supplémentaires, comme des équipements spéciaux, un nom d’item choisi par les donateurs. Deux personnes nous ont donné plus de 2000$. Ils prendront vraiment leur pied en jouant, avec leur visage sur un zombie, ou des grosses récompenses comme cela.
