Sorry for my crappy english questions, I’m french. I hope you’ll be able to understand.
- Hello. First, can you introduce yourself and the development team ?
- My name is Geoff Keene, I am the CEO and Design Director of Sandswept Studios. I am the lead developer on The Dead Linger.
- What is The Dead Linger ? Which games, movies or books inspire yourself ?
- The Dead Linger is the definitive open world, zombie survival sandbox that so many gamers have been looking for. The game was heavily inspired by Max Brooks’ « The Zombie Survival Guide », when I was at a much younger age. I’ve been designing the game on paper for years, and in the last 6 months we’ve began putting it together with a professional team.
- On your website, we can read some ideas, and features of the game. It will be awesome if you keep your promises, but isn’t it too ambitious ?
- It is absolutely too ambitious. Most developers would not dream of trying something this massive and risky. Unfortunately for those developers (and fortunately for zombie fans), we’re highly skilled, and highly insane.
- I think you know the famous Max Brooks’s book : The Zombie Survival Guide. Did you read it ? Will the game follow some of the rules in this book ?
- As I mentioned earlier, yes, I’ve read it cover to cover, many, many times. In fact, it’s sitting right next to me! The rules of the game will heavily follow the rules of the books — zombies only die if you kill the brain, freedom to choose the way you survive, all that good stuff.
- How many weapons will be included in the game ? What kinds of weapons ? Will they repairable ? Tell me more.
- I couldn’t possibly list all the weapons we have planned, from hundreds of melee items to dozens of guns and various weaponry to allow players to fight and kill the way they truly desire. Weapons will have durability, and guns will likely need to be cleaned after heavy use. It’s good to maintain your weapons!
- Will there a craft system ? If yes, tell me more.
- There will be a crafting system. At the moment, it consists of combining items into a new item (recipes, if you will.) We’ve got some big plans for it, but we’ll see how it plays out over the course of Alpha and Beta release.
- Will the environment be destructible ?
- The environment will be destructible where it counts, and later on, almost everywhere. Doors, windows, and furniture are a huge part of the game, so destroying and manipulating those will be a really big deal.
- Will there be vehicles in TDL ? How will it work ? Fuel, repairs, tire puncture … ?
- There will be vehicles in TDL, but not until later on in development. We want to do them right, that is, immersive, and we want them to be very realistic. They will require fuel, but as it is the apocalypse, ditching a car and finding a new one is usually better than trying to fill it up again. That is, unless you’ve modified it a lot, and made a real mobile fortress for you and your buddies.
- You said that TDL will feature procedurally generated worlds of up to 25,000 square kilometers. How the map will stop on the border ? Invisible walls, ocean … ?
- The current world size will probably change, and it could be much larger. If a player ever gets to the ‘edge’, which would take a very long time, we do plan to wrap it. Right now we’re not so worried about it, since most players will never be able to travel that far in a reasonable amount of time. The Dead Linger will feature absolutely no fake or invisible walls. Those are disgusting.
- Could you describe more precisly the barricade construction system ? How will it work ?
- Barricading will be entirely free-form. Players will be able to push and move furniture wherever they please, as well as the ability to hold objects, such as boards or planks of wood, and nail them to whatever object they want, over a door, over a window, anywhere!
- Will it be possible to customize our character appearence and abilities ? Man, Woman ?
- Yes, we have plans for lots of customization, male, female, and details of those. Clothing and equipment will also manifest visually on the character.
- There are no plans for friendly NPCs right now, but we do have some nasty hostile ones planned in the meantime.
- Up to 16 players in multiplayer mode, right ? Do you think, later, make bigger dedicated servers for big players communities ?
- We are aiming for at least 16 players. We know there could be a LOT more. It should be much higher by the time we’re done.
- When do you think the game will be out ?
- We are aiming for about 6 months from now to release Alpha. It should be out sooner than that, if all goes well.
- How much will it cost ?
- We are aiming for about 6 months from now to release Alpha. It should be out sooner than that, if all goes well.
- Thanks for answers !
- Thanks for the questions !
